If only one person didn’t want to rule the world, that would
prove Curt Smith wrong
Apparently, Tears For Fears was playing on the radio recently.
Right you are! Arguably the most famous Tears For Fears song is the 1985 classic "Everybody Wants To Rule The World." It's pretty solid, and apparently holds up to a little bit of aging. It still gets radio play, and people still enjoy listening to it when it does. By people, I mean me.
However, I can't help but wonder if the entire concept of the song is fundamentally wrong. Surely there is somebody in the world who doesn't want to actually run the whole thing. Sure, they probably have a thought or two every now and again how much easier life would be if you had everything and could do anything you want and have people do stuff for you. But, when you get right down to it, do you actually want to rule the world, or do you just want stuff?
Ruling the world is a lot of work, people. I seriously doubt anyone could actually do it by themselves. There would almost certainly be some people who didn't want to succumb to your rule, so you'd have to deal with them somehow. There would be problems galore that you'd either have to tend to or be blamed for, regardless of your desire or ability to do something about them. There would also be random happenstances that you'd have to deal with like earthquakes, typhoons, sporting event appearances. Really, if you ruled the world, you'd have so much to do, you couldn't actually enjoy the fact that you have full control over the world. It would pretty well suck, actually.
Based on all of this, I can pretty conclusively say that I don't actually want to rule the world. I'll leave that to other people. But, feel free to give me all the money.
