Your Annual Affirmation From Jeremy

Did people say “back in the day” back in the day?

When was "back in the day" back in the day?

So, I have some pretty irrational hatreds.  They typically materialize in jaunty rant form, which is good for everyone.  They also come in at least 2 "Jeremy's Big Rule #" form...I swear I had a third worked out, but I can't think of it anymore.  Then there's Nicolas Cage, which I don't really consider an irrational hatred, because it's completely rational.  One of the things that bothers me are stupid sayings.

Usually, sayings are stupid when people get them wrong.  Such as saying "I could care less."  That's stupid.  Saying you could care less implies an amount of caring greater than zero.  Since the very fact that you're trying to convey is the fact that you care zero, you're basically saying the exact opposite of what you mean.  You're dumb.  In print form, people get contractions wrong all the time, and that irritates me as well.  People seem to forget that contractions exist when typing, and they type "I should of gone to the store" because it sounds like "should've."  If you do that, you're dumb, too.

I really hate when people use the expression "Back in the day."

It says so many things that are just so awful.  First of all, you could be implying that you, as a person, only had value in the past, and that "back in the day" you were better than you are.  You're still a perfectly good person who has value to society, so stop it.  You could be saying that the world as a whole was better in the distant past, when it's very clear that it wasn't.  We have made amazing advances in the world, we have electricity and planes and cars and millions of technological wonders people even 30 years ago couldn't have dreamed of.  We've cured diseases and created art and music and made the world more accessible for everyone to enjoy.  Enjoy it!  You could also be saying that you're happiness has already reached its peak some time ago, and you've been on a downward slope like Nicolas Cage's career ever since.  We all have a day that we can look back on and think "that's the happiest day of my life," and that's fine.  But do remember...that's the happiest day you've had...so far.  At least leave open the possibility that something amazing is going to happen to you tomorrow.  Then, you won't have a "back in the day," you'll just have a "back then."
