Another year, another flu shot without protection from Bird
Flu. Disappointing
Probably the most disappointing thing of all is that we still haven't found a vaccine for Bird Flu. Too focused on trivial things like Ebola and who to blame for Ebola.
It really is a problem.
So here we are, still in the age of the ever-present threat of Bird Flu wiping out 60% of the human race, and all we hear about is people throwing a fit about the two people who have caught Ebola. Yes, Ebola's got to suck (which was a joke back in my college days, actually...not so funny now, is it?), and it has a high mortality rate, but there are very few ways of contracting it. Sound familiar? It should. It's the exact same issues that Bird Flu has.
Only problem is that the Influenza virus does a much better job of mutating and evolving into new strains than Ebola does.
Because of that, we have to get a new Flu shot every year. It will guard us from 3 or 4 of the strains of the virus that people predict will be the most problematic that season. Maybe a new strain will pop up that you're not vaccinated against, and you'll still get the flu, but it's a numbers game, and you're more likely to be protected than not. Unless, of course, a particular strain of the virus has no vaccine...such as H5N1.
So to everyone out there...don't get me sick this flu season. Go get your flu shot. But do keep in mind that it will not protect you from Bird Flu. And to those of you out there researching vaccines...please hurry. We're all counting on you.
